Recently I was super inspired by my friend Melissa at The Top Drawer RVA. She has this funky mad hatter style that I knew would be a perfect fit for my daughter’s bedroom remodel. More to come on that! Here is before picture.

To begin I throughly prepped this piece. If you’ve never prepped a piece of furniture before you can learn how to here. I gave it a coat of BOSS primer in clear. I knew I wanted the right side to have black and white stripes so I primed that side in BOSS white.
Next I gave the right side a couple coats of Cotton as a base coat for my stripes. After it was dry I applied my tape. I used the roll to measure them out so they aren’t perfect but it was easy and it looks good! I applied one more coat of cotton over the tape. I do this because paint is bound to bleed though on the first coat. So if you paint that first coat with the same color as the base coat you’ll get a crisp line! I followed with 2 coats of Caviar paint.
Now it is time for the fun part. The blend! The first application on a project like this usually doesn’t look good. This is where I am laying out my colors and deciding what exactly I want to create.
As you can see here, I totally changed my mind after it was painted on. This is part of the process. After I did this I knew I wanted it to fade from teals and greens straight into the purples and pinks. I went forward and blended it twice to get full coverage. You can see what it looks like after the first blend here.
Once I had the blending how I liked it, I applied gold leaf to the edge of the pink and stripes to make a clean transition. I accented the details with gold leaf as well. If you’ve never used gold leaf you can learn how in this video.
For the finishing details I stained the top with No Pain Gel Stain in Colonel Black. I sealed the whole piece with clear satin topcoat. Then I sealed it again with Gator Hide. This is going in my daughters room and man is she rough on stuff so it needs extra protection. Gator Hide is heat and water repellant so it will hold up to all of her shenanigans.
I hope this blog will inspire you to try something new!
